If you like The Beatles or Stockhausen, we're like a little bit of both, but I'm always surprised when we get on MTV or we get played on the radio. It's not like we say: let's be weird! We kind of just end up being whaaa!, you know, whatever we are. The Flaming Lips are just doing whatever we can. They could get played on the radio and they could be on MTV but they purposely go the other way. People think of us in this realm of progressive rock, the way maybe Radiohead is, and I try and remind people: the difference between us and Radiohead is I believe Radiohead could make a record that was more mainstream. "The Flaming Lips don't really go out of our way to be commercial or to get on the bottom rung of mainstream music. It's interesting to our fans who like to follow our ideas," says the front man." We've collected them and remastered them, and we'll tell people the stories or the reasons why we didn't feel like we could use them on The Soft Bulletin. "Most people who are computer-savvy have heard these tracks. "The Lips won't be playing Britain until next year, but in the meantime fans have an extended surround sound 5.1 DVD-audio version of The Soft Bulletin to look forward to. There are a few blurbs from the article that specifically deal with the DVD-A. The Independent's interview with Wayne can be found here: More Soft Bulletin DVD-A news today from the UK press. They also recorded a new song for "Christmas On Mars" and a couple of new songs for consideration for the next album, my favorite of which is called something like "You've Got To Hold On." I don't know what the exact plans are for that song, but I'll keep you posted. They also added tracks to a collaboration with the Thievery Corporation called "Marching The Hate Machines Into The Sun" (or something like that) which turned out great also. Try to listen to it without a tear coming to your eye. It's supposed to be on a Daniel Johnston tribute album coming out soon-ish and, although I haven't heard the final mix yet, it turned out lovely. What I meant to say is Sparklehorse laid down a bunch of tracks and the fellas laid more tracks on top of Sparklehorse's tracks. They added tracks to a Daniel Johnston song that Sparklehorse had started called "Go." Did that make any sense? What I meant to say is that Sparklehorse started the song and the Lips finished it. Wayne, Steven and Michael went up to Tarbox (Dave Fridmann's studio) to do the 5.1 surround-sound mix of "The Soft Bulletin," but all of the new gear that Dave was getting to facilitate the 5.1 mixing hadn't arrived yet. If anyone has any info on this leave a comment.Ī 2 Disc set at 192 kbps in one download HEREĠ3. But also because it's called simply "The Companion CD", not CDs. Not least because it's listed as a 1999 release and the radio sessions are from 2000. I have a feeling that Disc 1 might be the "official" release and Disc 2 might be a bootleg put together by someone.

Definitely a must for the Flaming Lips completeist, anyway. I think some of these songs/versions eventually came out as tracks on CD singles. I've decided to post it since I've never seen it around on the blogs. Not my favorite era Lips but what the hell it's the Lips.
